3 snacks to satisfy mommy cravings (with nutrition!)

Staying healthy can be really hard if it’s not a habit already. Ever since I found out I was pregnant with my first child, I’ve tried to keep up with making sure I’m fueling my body with the good things. But, boy, is it hard - especially when you crave cheese balls, ice cream, and sour gummy worms!! As a starter, I didn’t know how to let go of the junk I love. Let’s be honest, knock-off versions of Oreos or Pop Tarts do not taste the same.

One of the things I did was to look around for healthier options that could provide me with nutrition I needed yet still tasted good. These 3 have been my favorite go-tos, especially now as a breastfeeding mom!

Sweet Kale Salad by Taylor Farms - One of the things I kept reading about when I was pregnant was the benefits of eating kale. I tried eating it in various forms - smoothies, chips, cooked - and I hated the taste. When everything failed, I figured I would just suck it up and find a kale salad kit to shove it down my throat. Fortunately, I came across Taylor Farms’ Sweet Kale Salad Kit...and I fell in love!!!! It was flavorful and satisfying enough to eat as a meal. It’s packed with superfoods AND the creamy poppyseed dressing is to die for! If you’re trying to cut back on the fat from the dressing, you can use half the dressing bag instead of the whole thing (like I do), OR you can substitute the dressing for another one (although, I will say, the dressing really is what tops off the salad). I’ve used this salad kit for gatherings as well and always get compliments on it. It’s carried at local grocery stores, like Target, Whole Foods, and, sometimes, Giant. Because it’s so popular, the downside is that it’s often sold out. So when I do find it, I get 4 or 5 packs!

Target’s Archer Farms Trail Mix - If you’re a fan of sweet and salty, like me, then you’ll love Archer Farms’ variety of trail mixes! During my second pregnancy, I craved a bit of spicy food (which is completely unlike me because I DETEST spicy food!!!). My husband brought home the Sweet Cajun mix one day and I devoured half of the bag - haha! Needless to say, it became a regular item on our grocery list. I’m now loving the Toasted Coconut mix, too. Whatever your craving may be - whether it’s sweet, salty, or anything in between - they have a trail mix to satisfy it.

DIY Breyer’s Honey Walnut Ice Cream - Walnuts have a lot of health benefits and I was eating them a lot throughout my pregnancy, and especially now that I’m breastfeeding. But when my sweet tooth kicks in for ice cream, I love adding walnuts to get some nutrition in, too! I’ve stuck with a simple ice cream - Breyer’s Natural Vanilla - because it’s made with high quality ingredients and has less added ingredients than other ice creams (you can buy it at any local grocery store - Giant, Target, Whole Foods, etc). I’ll take a scoop or two, top it with walnut halves, and then drizzle some raw honey on top. Mmmm!!! From time to time, I may add a dash of cinnamon, too! This has become my favorite dessert - next to strawberry cream cake, of course ;)
